The musician Franco Melis, a launeddas (Sardinian triple clarinet) player, is filmed in sites associated with his art of playing this instrument, and its transmission, via scenes that seem to form the musical phrases of a sonata.
Franco Melis is the last launeddas player to have benefited from traditional instruction on how to play the instrument, for which music students share their master’s day-to-day life, from domestic chores to music lessons, in a continuum between art and life. Today, he in turn teaches the ropes of this polyphonic instrument that is played in continuous breaths. The artist Aurélien Froment films him in close-up scenes, or over a sonata, as the natural daylight gradually dims all around. We can but hold our breath, awed by these infinitely delicate scenes, by the elevation of sound, but also overwhelmed by such meticulous fingering.
For Aurélien Froment offers an evocation of music and of objects (the instruments, the statuette) by embracing them with the gestures that precede them. The film is a densely woven fabric made of matter, fingers and their effects, of the past - embedded in a panoramically filmed landscape - and of the present.

Aurélien Froment was born in 1976, in Angers (France). He now lives and works in Dublin (Ireland). A École régionale des Beaux-Arts (Regional School of Fine Arts), Nantes, graduate, he also studied at the Manchester Metropolitan University (United Kingdom). His work - which equally associates installation techniques and video, photography and sculpture - is built around the priniciples of narration and mise en abyme. Via frequent references to cinema, his work calls upon the collective memory and obscures the frontier between fiction and documentary.
